How to Care for High-End Appliances So They Last
Investing in High-End kitchen appliances can save you frustration, money, and time if they’re kept up and maintained properly. Having owned my KitchenAid mixer for 22 years and inherited my grandmother’s Le Creuset Dutch oven, I’ve learned that with the right care, these premium appliances truly can be “buy it for life” investments.
The same goes for appliances like Dishwashers. Dishwasher maintenance is not only essential when properly followed, but it can also save you money and reduce repair costs by following the care guidelines and cleaning regularly.
In this post, I’ve included some mini care guides for some everyday kitchen appliances and how to maintain them.

Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer Care
After Use Care:
- Wipe down the mixer head and base with a damp cloth after each use
- Remove and wash the bowl, beater, and dough hook in warm soapy water
- Dry all parts thoroughly before reassembling
Monthly Maintenance:
- Check that all attachments are properly seated and secure
- Inspect the power cord for any signs of wear
- Clean around the attachment hub with a small brush to remove flour buildup
Annual Care:
- Have the mixer serviced by an authorized repair center if you use it heavily
- Check the beater-to-bowl clearance and adjust if necessary
- Consider having the grease in the transmission housing checked
Pro Tip: Never submerge the mixer head in water, and avoid using the dishwasher for the bowl if you want to prevent water spots and maintain its shine.
Le Creuset Dutch Oven Maintenance
After Each Use:
- Let the pot cool completely before washing
- Use warm, soapy water and a soft sponge—never abrasive cleaners
- For stuck-on food, soak in warm water rather than scrubbing aggressively
Deep Cleaning:
- For stubborn stains, make a paste with baking soda and water. Scrub, soak and rinse clean.
- For cooked-on stains try boiling 4 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Scrape off remnants with a wooden spoon. Rinse and dry. - Le Creuset’s official cleaner is excellent for restoring the enamel’s original luster
Storage:
- Store with a towel between stacked pieces to prevent chipping
- Keep the lid slightly ajar when storing to allow air circulation
What to Avoid: Never use metal utensils that can chip the enamel, and avoid temperature extremes (like moving from freezer directly to stovetop).

Vitamix Blender Longevity Tips
Daily Use Cleaning:
- The self-cleaning feature is your friend—add warm water and a drop of dish soap, then blend for 60 seconds
- Rinse thoroughly and air dry with the container inverted
Weekly Deep Clean:
- Remove the blade assembly and clean separately
- Wipe down the motor base with a damp cloth
- Clean the tamper if you use it regularly
Monthly Check:
- Inspect the drive socket for any buildup
- Check that the container sits properly on the base
- Listen for any unusual sounds during operation
Long-term Care: Vitamix offers excellent customer service and replacement parts. If your blades become dull after years of use, replacement blade assemblies are available rather than replacing the entire unit.
Moccamaster Coffee Maker Care
Daily Use Routine:
- Empty, wash, and rinse the carafe and filter basket after each use. Dry with a kitchen towel.
- Wipe down the exterior with a soft cloth
- Leave the lid open to air dry completely
Weekly Maintenance:
- Clean the shower head (where water disperses) with a soft brush
- Wipe down the hot plate if your model has one
- Check the water reservoir for any mineral buildup
Monthly Descaling:
- Use Moccamaster’s official descaling powder or white vinegar solution
- Run the descaling cycle according to the manual
- Always run several cycles of clean water afterward to remove any residual taste
Water Quality Matters: Use filtered water when possible to reduce mineral buildup and extend the time between descaling cycles.
General High-End Appliance Care Principles
Read the Manual
-Every premium appliance comes with specific care instructions from the manufacturer. Keep these manuals accessible, either in a paper version or digitally. If you have lost your appliance manual, you can conduct an online search using the product’s name and model number, or contact the company directly.
Use the Right Tools
- Manufacturer-recommended cleaning products
- Appropriate brushes for detailed cleaning
- Soft cloths and non-abrasive sponges
Regular Maintenance Schedule
-Create a simple schedule: Most appliance manuals will specify how often it needs to be cleaned. For instance, the Cove dishwasher manual specifies to clean the filter and the inside of the dishwasher once every thirty washes. We have a reminder set for this in case we miss the filter reminder on the dishwasher.
-Some appliances require actual service technicians to come out and service the appliance. Our Subzero freezer and refrigerator needed the coils cleaned (which I had no idea how to do) so we contacted the customer support and they sent a local company to our home to service. It was simple.

Know When to Call Professionals Don’t attempt repairs on high-end appliances yourself. Most premium brands have authorized service centers that use genuine parts and maintain warranties.
Protect Your Investment
- Keep receipts and warranty information organized
- Register your appliances for warranty coverage
- Consider extended warranties for expensive items
Following the manual, creating a maintenance schedule and using professional services when needed can not only help extend your product life, it can protect you if you ever need warranty support.
The Bottom Line
Quality appliances are designed to last, but they need consistent care to reach their full potential. The few extra minutes you spend on proper maintenance will pay off in the long run. My 22-year-old Kitchen Aid mixer and my grandmother’s vintage Le Creuset Dutch oven are living proof that when you invest in quality and care for it properly, these tools become treasured kitchen companions that can truly last a lifetime.
Remember: the goal isn’t just to keep them working, but to keep them working at their best. Your future self and your family will thank you for taking the time to care for these kitchen investments properly.
